My friend Nitya suggested we meet at this bar that I had never heard of for a drink before dinner. Sunita is very much a name from the Indian sub continent and so were the two of us and admittedly I was rather curious. (And of course good luck always goes in threes…)

Well, I was half an hour late- like most of my brethren from that part of the world would be. In India if you invite a friend or foe to your home for dinner or for tea, it is quite customary and expected of them to be at least an hour late – all quite pukka, naturally! In NY, we Indians try to be a little bit more considerate. We feel that in this city it is within good manners to be 15 minutes late. And very much in good taste if you are half an hour late. More than that- then you have absolutely crossed the limits of decency. And it bears no consequence to the fact that the other person might not share your views on this extremely delicate subject of timing. In such areas we Indians choose to remain quite ignorant.

Well, Sunita’s Bar is a rather prettily attired venue with a vein towards the extremely stylish. So if you are in the ardent need to feel quite mod (like myself and my modest band of friends tend to feel every month or so) then on a Saturday evening (actually closer to midnight) do head towards this little lounge located in the Lower East Side of New York City. Right next to where Tonic used to be before it was shut down. Remember Tonic?

The music is fantastic…trance along with some down tempo lounge and the superb drinks are made by the owner, Sunita. A retired chemist and an extremely stunning woman from Trinidad who manages the bar and lounge with dexterity and an attitude inclined towards having fun. This is the perfect place to throw an intimate party or meet a friend or lover downtown. If you do find yourself there one evening please do try the jalapeno and mango martini!
